Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) is the two-year maths course taught in Year 10 and Year 11 at British-curriculum schools in Qatar, examined in two papers at Core or Extended tier. Edunest pairs your child with an online tutor who knows both tiers and the non-calculator papers, and teaches one to one in Qatar time.
Since the 2025 syllabus, each tier has one paper without a calculator and one with, equal in length and weight. Lessons prepare your child for both.
What we cover
The nine topic areas of the 0580 syllabus
Every candidate studies the same nine areas, and Extended covers all of Core before going further in most of them.
01
Number
Extended goes further
Fractions, percentages, standard form, ratio, rates, estimation and bounds, with and without a calculator. Marks often slip on bounds and repeated percentage change. Extended adds reverse percentages, exponential growth and decay, and surds.
Standard form · Upper and lower bounds · Compound interest · Surds (Extended)
02
Algebra and graphs
Much deeper at Extended
Expressions, linear and simultaneous equations, inequalities, sequences and graphs. Extended adds quadratics by factorising, completing the square and the formula, algebraic fractions, proportion, functions and differentiation. Slips in manipulation cost marks on every paper.
Sequences and the nth term · Quadratics (Extended) · Functions (Extended) · Differentiation (Extended)
03
Coordinate geometry
Extended adds two topics
Gradients, straight-line graphs, y = mx + c and parallel lines. Extended adds the length and midpoint of a segment and perpendicular lines. Questions often join this area to algebra.
y = mx + c · Perpendicular lines (Extended)
04
Geometry
Extended adds circle theorems
Angles, similarity, nets, constructions, scale drawings and bearings. When asked for reasons, Cambridge expects each angle justified with the correct property. Core uses two circle facts; Extended adds the full circle theorems, including the alternate segment theorem.
Bearings · Circle theorems (Extended)
05
Mensuration
Area, arcs and sectors, and the surface area and volume of prisms, cylinders, cones, pyramids and spheres. The harder formulas are printed on the paper; the skill lies in choosing one and keeping full accuracy.
Arcs and sectors · Surface area and volume · Compound shapes
06
Trigonometry
Much deeper at Extended
Pythagoras' theorem, right-angled trigonometry, bearings, elevation and depression. Extended adds exact values, the graphs of sin, cos and tan, trigonometric equations, the sine and cosine rules with the ambiguous case, and problems in 3D.
Pythagoras' theorem · Sine and cosine rules (Extended) · Trigonometry in 3D (Extended)
07
Transformations and vectors
Vectors are Extended only
Reflection, rotation, enlargement and translation, each described in full. Core reflects in vertical or horizontal lines and uses positive or fractional scale factors. Extended adds negative scale factors, combined transformations and vector geometry.
Enlargement · Translation by a vector · Vector geometry (Extended)
08
Probability
Extended adds conditional probability
Single and combined events, relative and expected frequency, with sample spaces, Venn and tree diagrams, with or without replacement. Learners often multiply when they should add. Extended adds conditional probability.
Expected frequency · Tree diagrams · Conditional probability (Extended)
09
Statistics
Extended goes further
Charts, averages and range, stem-and-leaf and scatter diagrams, and comparing data sets in words. Extended adds grouped data, quartiles, cumulative frequency and histograms with frequency density.
Scatter diagrams · Cumulative frequency (Extended) · Histograms (Extended)
Older past papers may include linear programming or box-and-whisker plots, which left the syllabus in 2025. Tutors filter practice material to the current syllabus.
How lessons run
How IGCSE Maths lessons run
Every plan starts from the tier, the series and the time left. Lessons are live and online, one tutor with one learner, in Qatar time.
Step 1
A first conversation and a starting check
The tutor learns about the school, the year, the tier and the target series, then sets a short diagnostic across the nine topic areas, with and without a calculator. It shows what is secure and where method marks are being lost.
Step 2
A plan tied to June or November
The plan counts back from the exam series: new topics in step with school, gaps closed in order of weight, revision before mocks and finals. You see it, and it moves as your child does.
Step 3
Weekly lessons on a shared whiteboard
Your child writes on a shared whiteboard or tablet, so the tutor sees every line and corrects a method at the step where it slips. Each lesson ends with a few questions for the week.
Step 4
Timed papers, split by calculator rules
Near the series, lessons move to timed past papers: non-calculator practice for Paper 1 or 2, calculator practice for Paper 3 or 4. Every paper is marked the way Cambridge marks, method first.
Step 5
Short updates for parents
Parents get a short note after lessons, and a candid reading of progress before mocks and the school's entry decision, so choices about tier and timing rest on evidence.
Plans adjust around mocks, school holidays and Ramadan.
The exam
The Cambridge 0580 exam, paper by paper
Every candidate sits two written papers at one tier, each worth 50%, and one paper per tier is taken without a calculator. All questions are compulsory, with working shown on the paper.

All Core content. Answers to 3 significant figures, angles to 1 decimal place, unless a question says otherwise.
How a tutor helps
Lessons build the habits that protect accuracy marks: full values kept in the calculator, rounding only at the end, and careful keying for powers, standard form and trigonometry.

Not allowed
All Extended content except using a calculator, including surds and exact trigonometric values.
How a tutor helps
Extended non-calculator questions reward exact forms: surds, fractions, answers in terms of π and exact values of sin, cos and tan. The tutor practises these, and multi-step algebra by hand, until they come naturally.
Paper 4 Calculator
Extended

Scientific calculator required
All Extended content, often in long multi-part questions, with the Paper 3 accuracy rules.
How a tutor helps
Extended papers give more weight to reasoning and communication. The tutor practises planning a long question and setting out each step, so method marks are earned even when a final answer goes wrong.

Exam series for schools in Qatar
Schools in Qatar enter learners for June or November; the March series is only for schools in India. Each school's exams officer confirms the timetable for its Cambridge administrative zone.
June series, 2026 cycle
Entries by 21 February; exams from 23 April to 9 June; results on 18 August 2026.
November series, 2026 cycle
Entries by 16 August; exams from late September to mid-November; results on 14 January 2027.
Retakes
The whole qualification can be retaken as often as a candidate wants.
Private candidates
Accepted for 0580, through a Cambridge centre that takes private candidates.
Grading
Core leads to grades C to G and Extended to A* to E; a result below G is ungraded. Cambridge notes that learners with A* to C are well prepared for AS & A Level Mathematics.
Worth knowing
The same course is graded 9 to 1 under code 0980, and an A* to G entry cannot switch after the entries deadline.
The syllabus and every paper are in English only.
A formula list is printed on page 2 of each paper; Pythagoras' theorem and the trigonometric ratios must still be known.
Candidates bring compasses, a protractor and a ruler, and can ask for tracing paper.
What we look for in a tutor
What we look for in an IGCSE Maths tutor
The standards a tutor meets before we match them with a 0580 learner.
Real depth in mathematics
A mathematics degree or equivalent depth, enough to explain why each method works and to handle the hardest Extended questions.
Command of the current syllabus
Both tiers of the 2025 to 2027 syllabus, the non-calculator papers, the formula list, and what changed from the previous syllabus.
Experience with Cambridge marking
IGCSE-level teaching and marking to Cambridge conventions: method and accuracy marks, required working, and follow-through after an early error.
Clear explanations for teenagers
Plain, patient English at the level of a 14 to 16 year old, with a check for understanding in every explanation.
Confident online teaching
A writing tablet or shared whiteboard, clearly handwritten steps, and good camera and sound for a focused lesson.
Safeguarding and contact with parents
Identity and background checks, professional conduct with young learners, lessons parents can join, and regular short updates.
Common difficulties
Where IGCSE Maths learners get stuck, and how a tutor helps
Six sticking points come up again and again with Cambridge 0580.
Freezing on the non-calculator paper
Why it happens
Years of calculator use meet a paper, worth half the grade, that must be done by hand.
How a tutor helps
The tutor rebuilds written methods for fractions, percentages, standard form and surds, opens lessons with short timed drills, and makes estimation a habit for checking answers.
Losing marks to early rounding
Why it happens
Rounding a middle value and reusing it pushes the final answer out of range, even when every method is right.
How a tutor helps
Your child learns to keep full values, round only at the end and give 3 significant figures, as Cambridge asks. Marked practice shows exactly where each mark went.
Right answers, missing working
Why it happens
When a question asks for working, a correct answer alone cannot earn full marks.
How a tutor helps
The tutor models a clear layout for each type of question and marks like an examiner, so setting out steps becomes routine and method marks stay within reach.
Algebra that slows everything down
Why it happens
Rearranging and factorising sit inside graph, geometry and trigonometry questions, so slow algebra costs time on every paper.
How a tutor helps
The tutor finds the step that breaks, whether signs, brackets or fractions, drills it in short varied sets, then brings it back inside mixed questions.
The newer Extended topics
Why it happens
Functions, differentiation, surds and exact trigonometric values are demanding, and older revision guides may leave some of them out.
How a tutor helps
The tutor teaches them from the current syllabus, worked examples first, and checks that all practice material matches the 2025 to 2027 content.
Unsure between Core and Extended
Why it happens
The tier fixes the grades available, and the school makes the entry.
How a tutor helps
The tutor tests your child on Extended-level questions and gives you an evidence-based view of a realistic target before you speak with the school.
